The Dubai Criminal Court sentenced an Asian sales representative for 3 months in jail, to be followed by deportation after serving the jail term, and fined him Dhs15,000 after he was convicted of forging a rental contract and a real estate registration certificate with which he defrauded a female airline attendant.
The incident dates back to an earlier time when the victim contacted a person who put an advertisement on a website offering to sell and rent housing units.
According to the victim’s testimony in the prosecution’s investigations, the suspect rented her an apartment for Dhs40,000 for a year, which she actually paid for the first year.
Upon the expiry of the contract period, the victim wanted to renew it, and she said she handed the suspect Dhs15,000 as a first payment and received a contract attested by the Real Estate Registration Department.
After some time, she received a call from the real property owner informing her that the one who rented her the apartment was not its owner, so she filed a report with the police.
The suspect admitted he connived with a fugitive to forge the lease contract of an apartment he rented and he also admitted that he got Dhs15,000 from the victim.
Last week, the Abu Dhabi Police, in co-operation with the Ajman Police, arrested a gang of 5 Asian people including a woman, who used phone fraud to trap their victims and get their savings and bank balances fraudulently. A number of mobile phones and SIM cards were seized in their possession.
Brigadier General Mohammed Suhail Al Rashidi, Director of Criminal Security Sector at Abu Dhabi Police, affirmed that the police would be on the lookout for anyone who seeks to undermine the security of society and seize people’s money fraudulently.
The police would also pursue these criminal gangs wherever they are in order to get the deterrent punishment they deserve in accordance with the law, he added.
He thanked Ajman Police for their efforts and co-operation with Abu Dhabi Police, which led to the arrest of the gang.
